U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has made enquiries about preventing outgoing President Donald Trump from launching a nuclear strike.
House Speaker Pelosi has stated that she has spoken on the phone with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley. General Milley is the highest ranking military officer in the United States, as well as the principal military advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council.
During their conversation, which House Speaker Pelosi reportedly initiated, they discussed the process of nuclear command authority. Milley’s office reported to Reuters that the General answered her questions.
House Speaker Pelosi has recently expressed concerns about President Trump’s state of mind, especially as his Presidency nears its ends. These concerns have only intensified further, after armed Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol days ago.
In a letter to colleagues, Nancy voiced her worries about a potential escalation of violence as Trump’s tumultuous term draws to an uneasy close.
“The situation of this unhinged president could not be more dangerous, and we must do everything that we can to protect the American people from his unbalanced assault on our country and our democracy,” she wrote.
According to an unidentified source speaking to the Associated Press, General Milley reportedly assured House Speaker Pelosi that there are precautions in place which would prevent President Trump from launching a nuclear attack.
An anonymous U.S. official who spoke confidentially to Reuters echoed this sentiment, saying that any use of nuclear weapons is a highly deliberative process.
