Orbital Corporation (OEC) said it has reached the first major milestone of its engine development programme with Lycoming Engines.

The company secured an engine development and supply deal with Textron subsidiary Lycoming Engines back in March.

The arrangement involves a 12-month engine development programme which is set to integrate Orbital’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) engines to Textron Systems’ Aerosonde programme.

Orbital describes Textron Systems as a “leader in unmanned aircraft systems and one of the largest suppliers of tactical unmanned aerial vehicles to the U.S. armed forces.”

Today OEC announced it had provided Lycoming with an initial prototype engine as part of this agreement, for the company to assess and inform further integration and design customisation requirements.

Orbital Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Todd Adler commented on the advancement.

“This represents good progress on our newest engine development and integration programme,” he said.

“Working closely with Textron Systems and Lycoming, we are driving the development timeline to ensure we are able to smoothly transition into production and the agreed supply contract in 2022,” he concluded.

Orbital Corporation shares closed today’s session up 2.5 per cent to trade at 82 cents.
