The US special envoy for Haiti, Daniel Foote, has resigned in protest over the Biden administration removing Haitians from the Texas border.

Earlier this week, the US started flights to return Haitian migrants from the Texas/Mexico border.

“I will not be associated with the United States’ inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and illegal immigrants to Haiti,” Mr Foote said in the letter that circulated publicly on Thursday.

Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and has recently been hit by earthquakes, presidential assassination and gang violence.

So far, the US has moved more than 1400 migrants from the camp in Del Rio to Haiti, including families.

By Thursday morning, US officials had moved thousands of people to other locations but around 3600 migrants remained, according to local authorities.

Mr Foote submitted his resignation on Wednesday, September 23.
