Australia’s second largest state, Victoria, reported 11 new local COVID-19 cases on Monday, halfway through a seven-day lockdown to fight a coronavirus outbreak that has now reportedly spread to an aged-care facility.

A further six locally acquired cases, in addition to the five reported this morning, that came through after the late night cut-off on Sunday night

Up to two residents at the Arcare aged-care facility in Maidstone have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Labor frontbencher Bill Shorten.

The centre, in Shorten’s electorate, was added to Victoria’s exposure site list yesterday after it was revealed a worker there tested positive to the virus.

Victorian health authorities are yet to determine how the worker contracted the virus.

Acting Premier James Merlino said so far 4200 close contacts have been identified and the situation could become worse before it got better.

Health authorities received 43,874 results yesterday after another big day of testing and more than 16,700 doses of vaccine were administered.

That figure is more than six times the 2622 doses administered on the same day a week ago.

Victoria remains in lockdown until, at this stage, 11.59 pm Thursday June 3, following an outbreak recorded in Melbourne’s north last week.
