xReality Group (ASX:XRG), a developer of VR headset training software programs targeting US defence and law enforcement markets, has made its first sale to the US Marines.

What it’s sold is called OP-2 Interceptor, a VR headset that trains US soldiers how to counter small weaponised drones – in other words, target practice headsets to address the real-world-risk of a fairly new and deadly form of warfare.

OP-2 Interceptor “allows single or multiple users to develop and rehearse counter-UAS tactics, techniques and procedures at a fraction of the cost of live-fire training,” XRG wrote on Wednesday.

“Small drones have become one of the most prevalent threats to ground forces in recent conflicts, and the U.S. military is moving to make counter-drone skills a capability held across the force rather than by specialist teams alone,” the company added.

“Instructors can plan enemy drone routes, set attack profiles and adjust drone behaviour in real time, then review each engagement from multiple viewpoints with objective data on shot accuracy, weapon angles and field of view.”

What will irk some investors is that there’s no dollar signs in XRG’s Wednesday announcement, and XRG has called the deal “not material.” Of course, the first-time-sale to the US Marines is what the premium could be, potentially, if the deal leads to further deals in the future.

“This order follows a sustained period of demonstrating and evaluating Interceptor with Marines across numerous units, and their feedback has shaped the product,” XRG CEO Wayne Jones said.
