KALiNA Power (KPO) has awarded an engineering contract to Enerflex for the modularisation of KALiNA Cycle plants.

This marks an important step in the company’s strategy of deploying multiple, combined cycle power plants in Alberta using KALiNA Cycle modules, which will now be fabricated by Enerflex.

Enerflex is an international engineering, design, fabrication, construction, and commissioning company that is based in the Alberta Province of Canada. It has significant experience with the packaging and modularisation of gas processing, power plants and other industrial facilities across more than 50 countries.

“Having met Dr Alex Kalina many years ago, we have followed the KALiNA Cycle technology with great interest and are pleased to see the progress made over the past couple of years with new management and industry partners,” Enerflex CEO and President Marc Rossiter said.

The Kalina Cycle technology uses waste heat that is generated from industrial processes, such as petrochemical, steel or cement making, to produce electricity. This means less power is purchased and, therefore, reduces the plant’s overall operational costs.

The technology can also be used to generate power from renewable energy sources such as geothermal and solar thermal.

“Modularisation of the KALiNA Cycle is a major priority in our program to deploy multiple packaged modules that can reduce the overall installed cost of each project,” KALiNA Managing Director and CEO Ross MacLachlan said.

Enerflex’s engagement involves a conditional, staged process to deliver cost-effective, modularisation of KALiNA Cycle plants. The first phase has commenced with engineering and cost estimating of modularisation underway.

This contract will address the current opportunities in Alberta and the province’s focus on revoking legislations surrounding the reliance on coal for energy.

KALiNA’s subsidiary, KALiNA Distributed, is even implementing a development program for multiple 30 megawatt-distributed generation power plants across Alberta, using advanced gas turbine technology and KALiNA’s waste heat recovery technology.

Company shares are up 10 per cent and trading for 3.3 cents each at market close.
