Bowen Coking Coal (BCB) has processed first coal from its Broadmeadow East mine near Moranbah and shipped a second vessel of coal from its Bluff Mine near Blackwater.

Both mines are in Queensland and these actions cement the company as the Sunshine State’s next independent metallurgical coal producer.

Mining at Broadmeadow East has gained momentum with more than 100,000 tonnes of run-of-mine (ROM) coal mined to date and further coal uncovered in the pit.

The first coal was processed over the weekend and sample analysis is underway for statutory export permits to pave the way for first coal sales in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile at Bluff Mine, the shipment consists of approximately 40,000 tonnes of ultra-low volatile pulverised coal injection (ULVPCI) coal.

An additional 400-tonne excavator has been mobilised at Bluff Mine and is assisting in accelerating overburden removal an ongoing ROM target 80,000 to 100,000 tonnes per month early in the next quarter.

Managing Director and CEO Gerhard Redelinghuys said the team has performed well “in the face of a very tight labour market and some weather delays”.

“Mining at Broadmeadow East is going extremely well after a rapid start up and in spite of similar staffing and weather challenges,” he said.

“Transforming the site from a padlock to mine our first 100,000 tonnes within three months of mobilisation reflects a stellar effort by the entire team.”

Refurbishment work at the Burton Coal Handling and Processing Plant (CHPP) and Train Load Out facility (TLO) is reportedly underway.

A fast tracked, phased recommissioning of the TLO is planned to start from early next quarter, opening the potential for additional bypass thermal coal sales while the CHPP is recommissioned.

The refurbished CHPP is expected to wash first coal from Broadmeadow East in the first quarter of 2023.

Shares in Bowen were up 12 per cent to close at 42 cents.
