BrainChip (BRN) has announced the registration of another patent in Australia to protect its growing portfolio of neuromorphic artificial intelligence microchip technology.

The company lodged a patent titled “Event-Based Extraction of Features In A Convolutional Spiking Neural Network” with the patent office awarding rights to the company.

BrainChip management expects this move to protect the company’s “ultra-low power neuromorphic AI IP.”

Neuromorphic AI refers to artificial intelligence technology modelled after processes in the human brain, which has been normalised in machine learning ‘neural network’ models.

BrainChip’s portfolio now comprises 18 issued patents, including 12 in the US, four in Australia, one in EP, and one in China. It also holds 30 patent applications across the globe.

The news saw BrainChip buck the overall market trend on Friday in morning trades, with the company in the green, as opposed to the ASX200 in the red.

BRN shares last traded at 32.5 cents.
