The Swedish government has given Talga Group (ASX:TLG) the green light on its exploitation concession for its flagship graphite mine.

The materials company’s Nunasvaara South project has been the subject of a protracted pre-approval process, with some HotCopper users on Friday expressing frustration at the lack of a final approval.

With that said, the company now has early-stage rights to mine at the project for 25 years under the EU’s Natura 2000 permit – first approved in April 2023.

However, opponents still have a right to appeal the decision. The company’s project remains within the Swedish court system for the time being, with an appeal opposing the project still waiting on a judge’s desk.

Frustration from HotCopper users is borne from the fact a Final Investment Decision (FID) – which the project needs to become reality – relies on that court process ending in the company’s favour.

At the same time, Sweden isn’t exactly a mining country.

With that said, Talga’s C-Suite remain bullish on the Vittangi anode project.

“We are delighted at the Mining Inspectorate’s decision. The approved exploitation concession for graphite mining at Nunasvaara South is another step towards establishing the integrated Vittangi Anode Project, and a key step in EU production of this critical and strategic mineral,” Martin Phillips, the Talga Group CEO, said.

“We look forward to the remainder of the project’s permitting process being finalised.”

TLG last traded at 37.5cps.
