Li-S Energy (ASX:LIS) has jumped +13% in morning trades as it teams up with NZ-based Kea Aerospace to test out its lithium sulphur battery tech in Kea’s lightweight high-altitude solar-powered drones.

Those drones, both companies hope, can be converted into assets capable of flying for months at a time on one battery, if Li-S Energy can put into practice the technical benefits of its battery composition formula.

The benefits of multi-month flights are obvious when you clock what Kea gets up to: It designs lightweight solar panel drones that fly in the stratosphere to monitor the ocean; natural disasters, and other high-resolution aerial data.

The drones, in between the lines, can be used just as easily to assist in scientific observations as they can be applied to defence and security-minded applications.

“The stratospheric UAV market is a key sector of interest with enormous commercial potential. Partnering with Kea Aerospace positions us to engage at the cutting edge of this sector,” Li-S Energy CEO Dr. Lee Finniear said.

Key to the partnership is that Li-S Energy’s lithium sulphur battery modules are lightweight. Kea’s drones could be called insect-like in nature with a sleek design and wide wingspan (laden with solar panels.)

The plan is: At night Li-S Energy’s lithium batteries will kick in, allowing Kea’s drones to coast on sunpower in daytime flight. Above the clouds, that becomes particularly viable.

Kea CEO Dr Mark Rocket – surely, he changed his surname before getting this job – spoke of the performance specifications Li-S Energy boasts around its batteries.

“Li-S’ next generation lithium-sulfur battery offers more than twice the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries while being greener due to the absence of key materials such as cobalt,” Rocket said.
