Westar Resources (ASX: WSR) has secured funding from the Northern Territory Government’s Geophysics and Drilling Collaborations program to accelerate exploration at its Bunda Creek copper project in the Birrindudu Basin.

The company was awarded $55,689 under Round 19 of the program, which will co-fund a regional airborne aeromagnetic survey across the project area.

Westar said the survey will cover 569sqkm and will provide high-resolution geophysical data to improve understanding of the basin’s geological architecture, including major fault systems that may have acted as pathways for fluids.

The work forms part of the company’s strategy to identify sediment-hosted copper deposits in what remains a largely underexplored region of the Northern Territory.

According to Westar, recent work by the Northern Territory Geological Survey, CSIRO and Geoscience Australia has highlighted the Birrindudu Basin as a potentially significant new frontier for copper mineralisation.

The company believes geological conditions at Bunda Creek contain several of the key ingredients required for sediment-hosted copper systems, including evidence of copper-bearing source rocks, structures capable of transporting mineralised fluids and suitable host formations.

The planned survey will extend coverage into a data-poor area of the basin and, when combined with previous datasets, provide continuous geophysical coverage across roughly 1,200 square kilometres.

Westar this morning said the information will be used to map basin structures, identify basement-tapping faults and define areas where geological complexity may increase the likelihood of copper accumulation.

Westar is targeting sediment-hosted copper deposits, a style of mineralisation increasingly attracting industry attention amid growing demand for copper linked to electrification and energy transition themes.

WSR last traded at 80c/sh, up more than +14% today.
