AML3D (AL3) is set to establish a research and development facility to further enhance large scale additive manufacturing.
The company’s collaboration with Flinders University and BAE Systems Maritime Australia’s ‘Factory of The Future’ will see the facility developed at the Tonsley Innovation District in Adelaide.
Additive engineering is said to be a core element of the Factory of the Future concept, with testing and trials of metal additive manufacturing systems set to begin shortly for potential use in naval shipbuilding.
It’s believed the permanent facility will support the development of new manufacturing techniques and technologies that will ultimately be adapted to digital shipyards.
Company Managing Director Andrew Sales said the establishment of an AML3D Arcemy unit would form the basis of a formal additive manufacturing (AM) research and development facility.
The Arcemy is a fully developed portable 3D printing system, currently in commercial operation, which incorporates design for additive manufacturing.
“The trials and research projects to be undertaken at the facility, in conjunction with BAE Systems Maritime Australia and Flinders University, will enable AML3D to further develop its large-scale metal additive manufacturing capability through added features such as in-process measurement, monitoring and adjustment that will improve quality,” Mr Sales said.
Flinders University students will be able to participate in the design and delivery of research projects and operation of the Arcemy unit. The university has also agreed to provide access to testing and validation equipment during the project.
Meanwhile, AML3D recently entered a joint research program with the university to investigate corrosion resistance properties of wire-AM produced components for marine environments.
AML3D last traded at 19.5 cents on July 8.
