Beam Communications (BCC) has secured a $1.2 million contract to supply Iridium airtime to Telstra’s wholly owned subsidiary, Mobile Tracking and Data (MTData).

The contract will run for a minimum of two years and will roll over yearly after that unless otherwise stated.

The company said MTData is a longstanding customer of Beam and has purchased hardware and services from the company over the last 10 years.

“This contract will contribute positively to the company’s revenue and profits over the next two years,” Managing Director and CEO Michael Capocchi said.

“Through Beam and the SatPhone Shop business, we have been receiving more business in recent times from Australian enterprise and government customers for Iridium’s satellite network services and Beam terminals.”

Mr Capocchi added that as satellite services are getting more advanced while becoming more affordable, organisations are starting to recognise the importance of having network coverage that goes beyond cellular and WiFi.

In October, the company signed a similar agreement worth over US$1.6 million (A$2.5 million at the time) from Nasdaq-listed satellite services company, Iridium Communications.

Under that contract, Beam will manufacture Iridium GO! Devices, which were jointly developed by the companies and launched eight years ago.

Beam said the order is expected to be delivered in FY24 to meet the strong ongoing demand for the portable satellite hotspot device.

Shares in Beam were up five per cent the end the day at 21 cents.
