The company this week successfully installed and integrated a lithium foil roller and laminator, which complements the extruder added in July. Together, these new systems make up a complete lithium foil production line, which can produce high-quality, 20-micron foils one-fifth as thick as human hair.
The development is “a major step in capability for Li-S Energy,” the company’s chief technology officer, Dr Steve Rowlands, explained today.
“Tight thickness control enables us to push Li-S cell energy density and performance while accelerating design-for-manufacture at scale,” he added. “We can now integrate cell designs faster with customers and deliver production-grade materials to other development programs around the world.”
Li-S managing director Dr Lee Finniear said Li-S being able to produce its own foils was “critically important” as the demand for battery materials keeps growing.
“Our new production line gives us a strategic opportunity to offer high-quality Australian lithium foils and lithium-copper laminates to battery development companies in Australia and around the world,” the company chief declared.
The soon-to-be-made foils will be used in the company’s lithium sulphur and lithium metal battery cell production, while also supporting export opportunities through the sale of the lithium-coated copper laminate foils.
The new production line was supported by a $1.78 million Industry Growth Program grant, which helped the company put together the whole setup quickly.
Li-S will next look to integrate its proprietary Li-Nanomesh nanomaterial coatings onto the foils at a production scale. That enhancement, the company’s gurus explained, should improve energy density, safety, and cycle life.
On the news, LIS shares have climbed +6.9%. The stock’s at 15.5cps today.
