The Market Link‘s editorial coverage across HotCopper is heading on a pause for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, with our articles, videos, insights and the HotCopper Wire podcast all returning Monday, January 5.
Listen to the HotCopper podcast for in-depth discussions and insights on all the biggest headlines from throughout the week. On Spotify, Apple, and more.
Today, the Australian market’s been relatively flat, closer to down as traders look to bank some profits before today’s shortened trade (things wrap up at 2pm) and then a four-day break for Christmas and Boxing Day.
From all of us at HotCopper, it’s been a pleasure sharing the CY25 investing journey with all our readers and listeners, and we hope you had a cracking year.
The wider bourse has had an interesting run, clocking up a +6.99% return from early January to the time of writing. We got up to 9,115.2 points at one stage in the rollercoaster calendar year, and even sat as low as 7,169 while we were deep in the middle of Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” blitz.
Then there was that great mid-year rush (and we even got a few RBA rate cuts snuck in there at the time), before heightened volatility and even more caution began to dictate what Aussie traders were doing day to day.
In the end, the ASX 200 ended a long way behind other bourses in Europe and the U.S., with most overseas netting returns as strong as +13% to +19%.
But, onwards and upwards – we’ll leave all the big stories from CY25 in these last twelve months and head on to new shores from January. There, maybe we’ll see more highs for gold, silver, and copper, a possible lithium revival, and more AI stories. There’s also Simandou, Bitcoin, and plenty more.
As I said, thanks to everyone who read our stories, listened to our updates, tuned in to the Wire podcast, and filled the forums with thoughts and theories. It’s been a lot of fun, and we’re looking forward to doing it all again next year.
That’s HotCopper’s last Close for the year, I’m Isaac McIntyre – happy holidays.
