Kingsland Resources (ASX:KNG) has achieved a “significant breakthrough” in its attempts to produce a gallium by-product at its Leliyn graphite project after recent metallurgical results proved the pivotal key in on-site testing.

The tests in question identified the mineralogical host of the gallium mineralisation in the Leliyn graphitic schist, the company confirmed in a market release.

The results were achieved via investigations by the CSIRO and showed that muscovite mica is the primary host of gallium mineralisation at Leliyn.

Kingslands walks away from the testing campaign with a mineralogical and geochemical baseline for future assessments of critical metal recovery from the Leliyn flake graphite deposit, and highlights integrated analysis.

Biotite mica was also recorded as a secondary host at Kingsland’s exploration site.

This is an important discovery for Kingsland because it means the company can now expedite gallium concentrate production at the Pine Creek project.

“It’s anticipated that once a gallium concentrate is produced, additional work will assess the viability of extracting gallium and/or gallium compounds from the concentrate,” Kingland’s managing director, Richard Maddocks, explained.

Gallium production won’t be considered in Leliyn’s next scoping study (due in the September quarter), but should come a lot sooner than later.

What will be included – if the test work is successful (and the company expects it will be), then Kingsland plans to unveil how additional flotation cells to extract mica will inform future processing designs at Leliyn.
