Lithium Universe (ASX:LU7) executive chairman Iggy Tan this week joined HotCopper to discuss the company’s latest exciting news – that it’s demonstrated proof-of-concept for its bold pivot into reclaimed silver.

“This announcement is the purity of silver that we extracted from these solar panels,” Mr Tan explained. “This technology is in two parts – the first is a microwave heating technology and the second is electro-jet silver extraction technology.”

“Our tech uses microwave heating technology, like the microwave you have in your kitchen… it heats up the panel selectively. The silicon waste heats up and delaminates from the plastic and the glass. The key part [there] is we can separate each layer in a separate form and create higher value in extraction.”

Why this matters for Lithium Universe is because “conventional” solar panel recycling involves crushing waste, which then makes it very difficult to get all the critical minerals out, and in turn creates “low value” recoveries.
