Good Afternoon and welcome to HotCopper’s Market Close for Thursday 9th of October. At least it was a green day! The XJO was tracking for a flattish green finish in the final moments of Thursday intraday trades.
Materials was in the lead well over a 1% gain, financials leading laggards, the majority of sectors evenly split but not too steep in either direction:

As for trying to divine what the ASX might do on Friday, that’s anybody’s guess. US futures haven’t really been too good of an indicator in recent history, and nor have ASX futures, really. For what it’s worth, here’s US futures as at 3.55pm AEDT:

So what about companies in the green?
Strickland Metals popped on Thursday after unveiling its discovery of new porphyry targets at its Serbian gold project which already boasts an AuEq resource over 7Moz. Magnetic surveys are next up.
Race Oncology popped again, adding to its stellar month-on-month gains, after appointing an international cancer scientist of note to its advisory board.
Elevra Lithium, meanwhile, staged a perhaps contrarian climb over +10% based on no news but surely a relief to long-term-holders who have had a pretty good last few weeks.
And as for the reds:
Austal Ltd down just over -8% in the final hour as some heat simmers off the stock, yet another beneficiary of the defence thematic (and, perhaps, a too-big-to-fail type situation given it’s Australia’s army shipbuilder.)
Core Lithium down around -4.5% at close on Thursday in contrast to Elevra as lithium miners remain subject to what is clearly a market not too unified on where it sees lithium going next.
Guzman Y Gomez red at close on Thursday as its FY26 Q1 earnings update originally pushed shares higher out the gate, but by midday, gains pared back and the company actually dipped red. That could be because it’s opened 30 stores in the last year, but vs pcp, sales are actually down.
That’s Market Close for Thursday, have a great night and we’ll see you on Friday.
