Neometals’ (NMT) joint venture company has begun stage two commissioning at its battery recycling demonstration plant in Germany.

Primobius GmbH, the joint venture company evenly shared with SMS Group GmBH, has begun wet commissioning the hydrometallurgical refining circuits of its showcase lithium-ion battery recycling demonstration plant.

The plant is made up of a fully constructed shredding and beneficiation circuit and a hydrometallurgical refining circuit. The circuits have been water tested, and stage one leaching of intermediate active material and filtering the carbon anode residue has begun.

Following this, the individual solvent extraction circuits to recover copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel and lithium will be next in line to be commissioned.

Neometals said the fully integrated, continuous process plant trial makes up one of the key evaluation activities required for the joint venture to make an investment decision for the construction of Primobius’ first commercial integrated lithium-ion battery recycling plant.

The company says kicking off the of stage two commissioning is another significant milestone for Primobius, and subsequent trials remain on schedule.

The integrated plant trials are expected to start in October 2021, with completion expected by the end of November 2021.
