Nordic Nickel (ASX: NNL) has opened a maiden drilling program at the Holtinvaara licence of its Pulju nickel project in northern Finland, with base-of-till (BOT) drilling specifically targeting three magnetic anomalies in the territory.
The work will comprise 2,240 metres of BOT drilling on the southern zone of these anomalies to better define the mineralisation there.
Prospectivity expectations for the land held under the Holtinvaara exploration license (EL) are boosted by its proximity to Nordic’s Hotinvaara EL, where the company has reported a mineral resource of 418 million tonnes at 0.21 percent nickel, 0.01 percent cobalt and 53 parts per million (ppm) copper for 862,800 tonnes of contained nickel, 40,000 tonens of contained cobalt and 22,100 tonnes of contained copper.
The new licence area is along strike from the Hotinvaara resource area, being 5 kilometres northeast.
In addition, the Holtivaara prospect is also underpinned by prospectivity geology, specifically the Mertavaara Formation which hosts the same ultramafic packages observed at Hotinvaara and notable across the whole Central Lapland Greenstone Belt (CLGB).
Nordic Nickel managing director Todd Ross said the geology was pointing to an era of exciting new discoveries for the company.
“This is an entirely new exploration licence area which has never been explored previously, but which contains highly prospective geophysical signatures and prominent structural geological features,” he said.
“The interpreted extension of the prospective Mertavaara Formation opens up a new highly
prospective area for potential new discoveries.
“The geochemical information obtained from this extensive BOT drilling program – which is effectively analogous to air-core or RAB drilling – will help us to vector into prospective target areas for follow-up diamond drilling.
“Given the success we have enjoyed so far in drilling at Hotinvaara to establish the current
JORC Mineral Resource, we are very excited about the opportunities that lie ahead of us at
Holtinvaara and we are looking forward to receiving the results of this BOT drilling campaign.”
Nordic Nickel is trading at 19c.
