The growing COVID-19 cluster linked to Sydney’s northern beaches has spread interstate to Victoria.
A teenager has tested positive for the potentially deadly virus, after returning home from a trip to NSW.
The 15-year-old had visited a number of sites within the Northern Beaches hotspot before returning home to Victoria recently.
Thankfully, health officials report the teen isolated upon her return after seeing the news about the growing Sydney cluster.
“The young person travelled home from Sydney with their parent,” Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley said.
“They have isolated when they returned to Victoria and as a result of the awareness of the situation in Sydney, the young person has sought testing,” he added.
“All close contacts of the family have been interviewed and the Department of Health is following up with any secondary close contacts,” he concluded.
The interstate case comes as eight new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in NSW today, with seven of those cases linked to the Northern Beaches cluster.
That brings the total number of cases linked to the outbreak in Avalon to 90, with a number of other cases recorded in NSW under investigation.
One of the cases being investigated in a nurse who contracted the virus while transporting patients, including those with COVID-19.
Meanwhile, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian will meet with her Cabinet Ministers today to discuss a potential lockdown over Christmas.
Premier Berejiklian said despite the drop in case numbers, there was a still a risk the virus is being spread undetected.
“When you have people with the virus who have attended venues outside of the Northern Beaches community, it always increases our concern to make sure there isn’t a permanent seeding event created by any of those venues,” she said.
“So it’s not only important to lock down anybody who has the virus but also to make sure that we get that information regarding their close contacts,” she added.
A decision is expected to be made on a Sydney-wide lockdown by Wednesday morning.
