Prominence Energy (ASX:PRM) is about to join South Australia’s hydrogen “gold rush,” with preparatory work underway for its first geochemical survey at the Gawler project.

The company is one of many local and international explorers that rushed in and grabbed acreage in South Australia after Gold Hydrogen’s significant drilling success at the Ramsey project since CY23.

Prominence made its first move at Gawler in June CY25, when it entered a binding agreement to acquire 100% of the issued capital of Gawler Group and its 100% interest in nine petroleum exploration licence applications (PELAs) in South Australia.

In mid-December, it wrapped up the successful acquisition of the Gawler project, providing it with one of the largest exploration portfolios in a world-class natural hydrogen exploration region.

The commencement of field work within petroleum exploration licence 803 is the next step after the completion of technical de‐risking work completed in the December CY25 quarter. Those studies identified multiple hydrogen source rocks and reservoir–seal pairs across the permit.

Prominence’s CEO, Dr Krista Davies, said the upcoming survey program will combine soil gas sampling and water bore sampling to screen the licence area for natural hydrogen (H2) and helium (He).

“This initial geochemical program is an important step in systematically screening PEL 803 for natural hydrogen and helium,” she said.

Ms Davies continued: “Soil gas and water bore sampling are cost-effective, low- impact techniques that can provide direct evidence of active gas migration. The results will help refine and prioritise our future seismic activities, which we anticipate commencing in the second half of 2026.”

The geochemical survey is designed to prioritise zones for follow-up seismic and drilling.

PRM is steady at 69.5c today.
