Talga Group (TLG) commences trial mining at its Vittangi graphite project in north Sweden.

The 2021 trial mining campaign is extracting an approximate 2500-tonne sample of natural graphite from the Niska South deposit of Vittangi. Graphite is defined as a critical mineral in the European Union.

The raw ore will be processed and refined into the company’s flagship lithium- ion battery anode product, Talnode-C, for large qualification trials in electric vehicles.

Site works include the installation of environmental monitoring systems, such as dust sampling and water treatment equipment, as well as roadworks.

Notably, the first stage excavation shows high grade zones at shallower depth than expected.

Managing Director Mark Thompson is looking forward to the trial.

“We are excited to start this trial graphite mine at Niska South to supply critical natural graphite for our downstream refining into greener Li-ion battery anodes for electric vehicles,” he said.

“Additionally, seeing such shallow and high grade mineralisation extending from our drilling and deposits up to three kilometres away demonstrates the consistency of this world-class graphite supply for more sustainable battery manufacturing within Europe.”

Talga was trading 7.27 per cent up at $1.55 per share at 10:30 am AEST.
