Proteomics International (PIQ) has announced its European patent protection for its PromarkerD predictive test has been expanded beyond diabetes.
The test can now diagnose individuals who are pre-diabetic and asymptomatic for kidney disease, while the company’s original European patent was restricted to diabetic kidney disease only.
The International Diabetes Federation has estimated that around 537 adults worldwide currently have diabetes, while an additional 541 million are living with a pre-diabetes condition, equivalent to 10.6 per cent of the world’s adult population.
Pre-diabetes is a term used to describe people with impaired glucose tolerance. This means they are at a higher risk of developing type two diabetes and diabetes-related complications, such as kidney disease.
Further studies are now needed to show that the test can be used to diagnose kidney disease beyond those with diabetes.
“The expanded patent coverage is an important addition to our PromarkerD intellectual property portfolio and provides an exciting opportunity to increase our addressable market in Europe,” Managing Director Richard Lipscombe said.
“There is the potential for the PromarkerD test to be use to determine if a whole new group of people are at risk of developing kidney disease.”
The European patent has been granted for France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the Untied Kingdom.
PIQ last traded at 83.5 cents per share on July 22.
