Atomos (AMS) has completed the development of a “world-class” 8K video sensor that allows cameras to record in 8K ultra-high definition.

8K video has four times the resolution of 4K video and gives video creators more flexibility when zooming in or cropping their shots during editing, as the resulting shot maintains a sharp resolution.

Five years ago, the company acquired the intellectual property rights and technical team from broadcast equipment firm, Grass Valley, so it could develop a leading-edge 8K video sensor.

Now that the development is complete, Atomos confirmed it’s looking for commercialisation opportunities and is in discussions with several camera makers who it said are showing “great interest”.

There are several 8K televisions already on the market from big brands like Samsung, Sony and LG, and 8K gaming consoles are expected soon.

However, 8K content has been lagging because owning 8K sensor technology is extremely rare.

Shares in Atomos were up 13.3 per cent, trading at 17 cents at 12:46 pm AEDT.
