Renergen (RLT) has become the world’s newest producer of liquid helium after achieving the milestone at its Virginia gas project in South Africa.

It comes after the company officially switched on the hydrocarbon producing plant in September 2022, but experienced delays in producing liquid hydrogen.

The Virginia project is South Africa’s first commercial liquid natural gas plant.

“Having the helium plant in operation and producing liquid helium is a truly spectacular achievement by the team who went above and beyond to achieve the major and critical milestone,” Renergen CEO Stefano Marani said.

“All components of the phase one plant are now in operation, and South Africa joins the ranks of only eight countries in the world to produce this rare and valuable liquid.”

Renergen said the helium module was now operational and being optimised.

RLT shares last traded at $2.02 on January 20.
