Ardea Resources (ARL) has intersected a 1.75 metre zone of basal nickel sulphide while drilling a downhole EM conductor at the Emu Lake target.

Emu Lake, within the Kalpini Project area, is located 70 kilometres northeast of Kalgoorlie and is said to contain a sequence of ultramafic flows with proven Silver Swan- and Kambalda-style nickel sulphide endowment.

Drilling of the 8000-siemens conductor began at the end of March, and results have shown nickel sulphide at the base of an ultramafic lava flow horizon.

Ardea has said the entire Emu Lake stratigraphic sequence is overturned, which is why the stratigraphic “basal contact” is intersected at shallower drill depths.

The drillhole, AELD0002, intersected 0.65 metres of visible massive and semi-massive nickel sulphides from a depth of 367.2 metres and 1.1 metres of matrix and disseminated nickel sulphides.

Further, the discovery appears to be on the basal contact between a porphyritic intermediate volcanic unit and a serpentinised ultramafic lava flow unit.

According to the company, this could represent a new mineralised basal-contact position on an under explored ultramafic horizon on the far west of the Southern Binti zone.

The company is awaiting laboratory assays to confirm the presence of massive and semi-massive nickel sulphides which were confirmed by handheld XRF Niton readings.

Managing Director Andrew Penkethman commented on the discovery.

“This new basal contact provides a platform to test along this stratigraphic horizon for channel positions where the sulphides are insitu and expected to be thicker,” he said.

“The available geophysics is showing there is potential for such a channel to exist below the hole which could extend for a considerable length in a similar fashion to the Silver Swan channel located 35km west, on a parallel ultramafic belt,” he continued.

Shares are 2.9 per cent higher at 53 cents each at 11:30 am AEST.
