Recce Pharmaceuticals (RCE) has initiated its phase I/II trial for diabetic foot infections (DFI) at Liverpool Hospital’s South West Sydney Limb Preservation and Wound Research Unit.

Patients are receiving doses of Recce 327 (R327), the company’s flagship anti-infective that has demonstrated efficacy in UTIs and burns trials.

While R327 is currently administered intravenously in the ongoing UTI trial, the DFI trial will apply the drug topically.

Outpatient nurses are responsible for daily dosing, making this the largest ongoing medical DFI study in Australia. Recce anticipates releasing interim data on trial effectiveness before September.

DFI patients will undergo daily dosing for a consecutive two-week period. Liverpool Hospital was chosen due to its internal High-Risk Foot Service unit, which treats more than 800 patients annually, with more than 80 per cent of them suffering from diabetes. Recce aims to leverage R327 to access the US market, where diabetes is the leading cause of amputations. The drug was recently patented in Australia.

Diabetes often leads to the development of infected foot ulcers, with amputation required in 14 to 24 per cent of DFI cases.

“R327 topical dosing of multiple patients in Australia’s largest DFI study is another welcomed advance to the company’s infectious disease portfolio of clinical programs,” RCE CEO James Graham said.

RCE shares last traded at 69 cents.
